In 2019 I want to learn this tune Shetland Night from Blazin' Fiddles to a level where I can play along to the recording.
This is what we're up to:
It's a wonderful tune that I haven't found any tutorials or sheets to, so it'll be learn by ear. The video gives us all the hints we need for bowing, and it shows the different fiddlers with distinctive ornaments and different doublestop/harmonic possibilities.
I chose to skip the rhythmic introduction. It's important but I'll come back to it later. I wanted to first learn 0:17-0:27, which gets us the main refrain, as well as the low strain and gets us back to home base for the next phrase.
What a challenge 10 seconds turned out to be!
First I had to identify the key, which is TBA (haha I didn't do my homework yet!)
I used the Amazing Slowdowner to slow and repeat just that clip to about 60% speed and only then started getting the first main phrase.
The low strain, where there is a run down to the G string and then back home gave me the most challenge, since there were a few grace notes in there and I couldn't count exactly how many notes there were. I either play with one too many notes, or one too few notes. It wasn't as smooth as their version.
It took me about 1.5 hours to get to the end of that phrase. I need to get this up to tempo and then start on the next 10 second section! This is going to take me all year.
